Carmel High School receives statewide recognition
Carmel High School took first place in the Monterey County High School Voter Registration Competition.
The schools victory earned them recognition from the Secretary of State, the Board of Supervisors, and the Monterey County Elections Department Thursday. Students managed to fill out 100 registration cards for the win.
Supervisor John Phillips present the first place award to the Associated Student Body President, Teejan Saddy. In addition to taking first place and receiving a certificate from the Board of Supervisors, each student involved received a certificate of recognition from Secretary of State Alex Padilla.
The program was created by the Elections Department to give all local high schools the chance to participate in the state designated High School Voter Education weeks. According to Claudio Valenzuela, Registrar of Voters: “Studies show that people who have a positive experience voting early on are more likely to become lifelong voters; in this case we wanted that positive experience to begin with voter registration.”
In total, the top three schools registered and pre-registered 236 students between the ages of 16-19. North Monterey County High School and Alisal High School finished in second and third place respectively.
