Construction on old courthouse will close road for a year

The original Monterey County Courthouse was built in the 1930’s, but has been empty for the past ten years. The County has been doing smaller projects at the former courthouse, but it was all just in preparation for this major renovation. Everything has been removed from the building, down to the bare concrete. This is the first major project that’s been done on the building since it was built.

“We will be putting back in modern offices. Putting in all new finishes, completely upgrading the building with heating air conditioning and electrical,” said Acting Chief of Public Works Donald Searle.

Once completed it will be the new home to the public defender and a law library as well as other offices. This project is expected to take a year and the construction company requested one westbound lane on Alisal be closed for the duration. That closure begins on Saturday. The contractor says the lane closures are necessary so they can move equipment and materials back and forth.
