Holman Highway Roundabout 68 update for your drive
UPDATE: After finishing up the northern portion of the project, crews are now working on the southbound onramp and main entrance to the highway gate at Pebble Beach.
“You’ve got to break eggs to make an omelet,” said Pebble Beach resident John Peterson. “So they’re making a mess now, so hopefully it gets all cleaned up.”
On the Highway 1 southbound onramp crews are digging up pavement and laying down a new road.
“There is the main roundabout which is at the intersection and there’s a smaller roundabout at the intersection with Pebble Beach,” said Grant Leonard with Transportation Agency for Monterey County. “They’re really working on that smaller one now for the next five weeks.”
People coming from Pacific Grove or CHOMP turning right onto the highway will experience some delays.
Pebble Beach residents and visitors heading to Monterey will also experience some impacts because they can no longer turn left to get onto the highway. Instead they’ll have to turn right, make a u-turn at Carpenter Road and Ocean Street, then get back on the highway.
“It’s going to be an inconvenience because we’re going to have to go south when we want to go north,” said Peterson. “Or we’re going to have to go all the way through Monterey to get on the highway.”
Residents told KION they have mixed emotions about the project as a whole. Some believe it’s unnecessary and will just confuse drivers while others welcome the change.
“I look forward to less congestion at the entrance to our area,” said Pebble Beach resident Lynn Carmichael.
Project officials said they understand the impacts and are asking people to be patient.
“Remember this is just for a couple of weeks and a couple of months,” said Leonard. “By the end of summer we’re going to have a nice brand new intersection it will be less congested and safer for everyone.”
The project is expected to wrap up by September or October of this year.
If you have any interest in watching the process, there’s actually a live camera of the construction that’s available on the Transportation Agency for Monterey County website. People can also sign for text alerts about the ongoing project.
