Crews battle two small grass fires in South Monterey County

Firefighters were busy putting out two fires in South Monterey County Monday.

Cal Fire said the first started at 11:30 a.m. in the King City area near the intersection of Highway 101 and Jolon Road. No structures were threatened or damaged.

The fire scorched three acres of grass including an area adjacent to the base of a power pole. Crews discovered damaged power lines while they were controlling hotspots.

As firefighters were working to put out this fire, crews from the City of Soledad, the Correctional Training Facility Fire Department, the Greenfield Fire Department, the City of Gonzales Fire Department and Cal Fire got reports of a second fire in the foothills, east of the Soledad City limits.

The second fire grew to eight acres, but crews were able to stop it from spreading. Firefighters said workers in the area were using grinding and cutting tools and the sparks from the tools started this grass fire.

No structures were damaged and no one was hurt in either incident.

Cal Fire wants to remind the public that wildfire season is quickly approaching and firefighters are asking residents to be aware of current weather conditions as well as be cautious when using power tools or mowing their properties,
