Watsonville residents beautify Sunset Beach to celebrate Earth Day

A group of people from West Marine collected around 250 pounds of trash from Sunset Beach in Watsonville today where they spent the majority of their working day dedicated to cleaning up their environment in the lead up to Earth Day tomorrow.

Santa Cruz County resident and West Marine Watsonville beach cleanup organizer Jono Acquisti said he mobilized eight teams consisting of five people each to unleash their cleaning prowess on the beach in celebration of Earth Day.

Acquisti said he felt it was important to give back to the community in order to beautify the area, especially in the wake of the detritus left behind during recent storms and to inspire action in defense of environmental protection.

“We wanted to cleanup Sunset Beach for Earth Day. After the storms, the river beds throughout the Central Coast deposited a lot of rubbish into various beaches scattered throughout the county and it’s important we all play our part to preserve the pristine way of life our area is known for,” Acquisti said.

“Staying true to our philosophy of life on the water, whether we’re boating or fishing, this is our way to support and retain the beautiful surrounds Monterey County residents and visitors are used to”.

“We wanted to act according to our worldview at West Marine to, ‘conserve marine resources, reduce our impact on the environment, and promote boating’,” Acquisti said.

Earth Day is celebrated each year with events, festivals and rallies, often with the support of A-list celebrities and political leaders. It is anticipated more than one billion people will celebrate Earth Day around the globe tomorrow.
