City of Salinas hosts immigration forum

The City of Salinas held a special meeting Monday night.

The topic of discussion, how the federal government’s actions on immigration can affect the Central Coast.

City officials say forums like this are important to keeping the community informed of their rights and responsibilities when it comes to immigration.

“There’s tremendous fear and concern.” City councilman Steve McShane said “[Monday’s] forum features the congressman and other non-profits and representatives that seek to communicate rights, responsibilities and clarify whatever we can on the topic.”

Though many audience members differed in opinion on local matters, most came to get a clearer idea from Panetta and the four person panel as to how their community will be impacted by the federal government.

“We want to try to address the fear in Salinas that folks are going to be rounded up or that there may be some drastic measure in the part of the federal government” Councilman McShane said.

Aside from taking audience questions, Congressman Panetta wanted to stress that undocumented immigrants be prepared if they are detained.

“People need to understand, they need to know their rights and they need to be prepared if something like that happens” Panetta said. “That’s why it’s so beneficial that City Council [and] the mayor are having town halls like this. I’m honored that I can come by, say hi and give my view from Washington D.C.”
