Local firefighters heading to Seattle for charity climb

Local firefighters are heading to Seattle to help raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Salinas firefighters, along with crews from Seaside and North Monterey County, are participating in the Scott Firefighter Climb this weekend.

Wearing their usual firefighting gear, which weighs about 70 lbs, they’ll scale 69-floors of the Columbia Tower with money raised going to charity.

Capt. David Furey has participated in the climb for years and always wondered how the money was spent. He found out when his father-in-law battled cancer. The organization helped offset travel costs for medical care.

“Being on the other side of that coin and seeing where that money goes made me feel really good about what we were doing and why we were doing it cause it, I personally seen where it goes and how it positively affects people,” Furey said.

The team hopes to raise $10,000. So far they’ve raised $6,700.
