Trapped horse rescued from mud near Wilder Ranch

A horse, trapped up to its chest in soft sand and mud, was rescued Tuesday afternoon near Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz County.

Cal Fire crews said rushing water was moving across Woodcutter’s Trail just off of Smith Grade Rd., when the horse and its rider got stuck.

Crews said the diverted some of the water from the creek and worked to firm up some of the sand to get the horse out.

The rider was able to get off the horse safety and the horse was not hurt.
