Community of monks in Big Sur stranded because of storms

People and businesses in Big Sur could be shut down for months while badly damaged roads are rebuilt, according to officials.

The community at Hermitage, monks and staff said they will have to close their doors to guests for nearly two to three months, which will cause a huge financial blow to the Hermitage.

According to officials the Hermitage will suffer a loss of $300,000 in income because of the closures caused by heavy rains, severe flooding and mudslides.

The repairs and rebuilding needed for entry roads alone is estimated to be above $100,000 and could go as high as $250,000, officials said.

Officials have started a GoFundMe campaign to help the monks at New Camaldoli Hermitage raise the funds needed to keep this community afloat.

In just over a week the campaign has raised more than $100,000 the goal is to reach $300,000.
