PREVIOUS STORY: Opening statements in the case against Antolin Garcia-Torres for the murder of Sierra LaMar are beginning on Monday, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
The trial was postponed earlier this month as the defense needed time to review DNA testing presented by prosecutors.
LaMar’s DNA was found in Garcia-Torres’ red Volkswagen Jetta in May 2012, two months after her disappearance, according to prosecutors.
She was last seen leaving for school near Morgan Hill and did not show up to the bus stop on the morning of March 16, 2012. Her body hasn’t been located, despite many community-led searches in the years following her disappearance.
Garcia-Torres faces one count of murder during a kidnapping and three more for attempted kidnapping of three women during an attempted carjacking. If convicted, prosecutors say he’ll face the death penalty, consecutive to 14 years in state prison.
