Palo Colorado culvert fails, further damages road

Residents of Palo Colorado Canyon, south of Carmel, may be wondering when they’ll get a break. In June, it was the Soberanes Fire. This month, heavy winter rains have damaged their only route to Highway One.

The roadway was initially closed on January 13, 2017 when a flooded culvert caused a section of the road to fail. Another round of storms has only made the situation worse.

As county crews work to repair the road, the latest damage only doubles the workload of a project that was expected to take 30 days.

KION was there during the worst of the fire, when evacuated homeowners wondered if their homes would survive. Today, reporter Matt Sizemore revisited the area to see how residents are coping with the effects of the mud, silt and debris that clogs Rocky Creek.
