15-year-old gunshot victim dies

UPDATE 1/23/17 3:10 PM: The 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head as he stood near a Salinas intersection last Friday has died.

Salinas police say they were notified on Sunday that Jesus Silva Hernandez had died from his injuries.

Hernandez was shot at around 12:50 p.m. in the area of Mae Avenue and C Street. Police say he stopped there often to use a Wi-Fi signal in the area. Officers say he was talking on his phone when a man wearing dark clothing approached and shot the boy several times. The shooter fled in a waiting black-colored 4-door sedan. The sedan was last seen driving westbound on Del Monte Ave.

According to police, Hernandez had no known history with local law enforcement.

The department’s investigations bureau is investigating this homicide as gang related due to the way the shooting was committed and the belief the suspects are associated with local gangs.

This is the sixth homicide (including the suspect killed in the Officer Involved Shooting) recorded in the City of Salinas this year.
