Highway 1 closure extended to Anderson Canyon bridge

Caltrans has expanded its closure of Highway 1 south of Big Sur due to additional rock and mudslides. The highway is now closed from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo to Anderson Canyon in Monterey County.

The latest slide forced Caltrans to move the boundary north, from Lucia to Anderson Canyon bridge.

Locals and guests may travel south only until 4 p.m. Friday, from Esalen. Vehicles will be escorted by a plow truck around Paul’s Slide in order to take Nacimiento-Ferguson Road south. No northbound traffic will be allowed.

Motorists are allowed to travel south on Highway 1 from Carmel to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, or travel north from Cambria to Ragged Point.

Caltrans said its next scheduled update will be posted by 12 noon Saturday, unless conditions warrant earlier updates.
