Fallen tree closes Park Avenue in Capitola
UPDATE 1/20/2017 12:15 PM: Capitola Police report that Park Avenue will remain closed between McCormick Avenue and Cabrillo Street until after 5:00 p.m.. The road was closed earlier Friday due to a downed tree and power line.
ORIGINAL STORY: Park Avenue is closed in Capitola between Kennedy Drive and Monterey Avenue due to a fallen eucalyptus tree. Crews expect to have the road clear by mid-afternoon.
According to Captiola Public Works Director Steve Jesberg, the tree fell across the roadway and brought down power lines sometime before 6:00 a.m. Friday.
With another storm set to arrive, Jesberg said public works crews will be on standby this weekend to “monitor and react” as problems occur.
One area of concern is the Wharf House restaurant on Capitola’s wharf, where crews have covered windows with plywood as a precaution against battering tides.
“We are most concerned about high tides tomorrow,” said Jesberg. “It will be high tide tomorrow morning around 6 o’clock, and it’s that combination of high tides and high surf coming in together.”
Jesberg told KION today that he expects there will be some parking restrictions Saturday in Captiola Village near the sea wall.
“We don’t have much a beach,” he said, “and tomorrow, we won’t have one at all.”
