More rain raises additional worries
If wind and rain cause any significant damage in the next few days, it won’t come as a surprise to residents near Rio Del Mar in Aptos. They’ve seen it first hand. In 1982, a home on Moosehead Drive broke in half and fell into Aptos Creek.
“We really don’t have as many problems as it used to be when it would rain like this, but it’s still challenging,” said James Polizzi, who lives right along the Aptos Creek.
He and fellow neighbors are staying prepared for this weekend by keeping the streets clean and the creek clear of debris. Residents say they’re confident things will be alright in terms of flooding, but are concerned about trees coming down.
“We’re not worried about it here as much as me hitting somebody else, or my tree falling on someone else’s property,” added Jerry Cannella, who also lives along the creek.
That’s something Aptos/La Selva Fire crews are concerned about as well, with emergency responders and crews ready to go.
“The trees are still coming down because the ground is so saturated and we are expecting some winds so that could wreak some havoc,” said Captain Scott Collin with Aptos/La Selva Fire.
Sandbags are also readily available for residents in the area at the Aptos Chamber of Commerce.
