Levee breach revealed as a cause of flooding near Hollister

Inspection teams from San Benito County have revealed a breach along the Pacheco Creek levee just northeast of the bridge on Lover’s Lane as one of the caused of devastating flooding near Hollister.

The breach is located on private property and is about 100 feet long by 50 feet deep. Officials say there are also blockages of tree brush and debris along the creek banks that contributed. Officials warn the public not to go near the brush.

Officials say 20 homes are threatened by the breach should additional flooding occur.

San Benito County Public Works, the Office of Emergency Services, and the Sheriff’s Department are working together to shore up the breach before next week’s storm.

Areas around the levee will be checked to prevent potential damage.

County officials are asking for cooperation from residents in the Lover’s Lane area to gain access to the affected areas.
