Tuesday update: Highway 1 remains closed south of Big Sur
UPDATE 1/10/17 1:45 PM: Caltrans temporarily opened a section of Highway 1 Tuesday to local traffic, emergency services and visitors who want to leave the Big Sur area.
At 1:00 p.m., one lane was opened to allow northbound traffic to exit from Fullers past Fernwood.
At 1:30 p.m., one lane was opened to allow southbound traffic (local residents and emergency vehicles) to enter from Fernwood to Fullers.
The roadway was scheduled to close again at 2:00 p.m. to allow crews to clear debris from recent slides. The closure will remain in effect indefinitely.
UPDATE 1/10/17 9:50 AM: Caltrans reported Tuesday that Highway 1 remains closed from Ragged Pt. to Fernwood.
Local residents anemergency vehicles can travel in some restricted areas, but crews still need to clear a dam formed by fallen trees.
On Monday, crews created enough open room for emergency vehicles to get through. According to Caltrans, new debris fell throughout the day, adding more than 100 yards of new material that will need to be cleared.
As of Tuesday morning, Highway 1 remains closed from Ragged Pt. (SLO PM 72.87) to Fernwood (MON PM 47.03).
Emergency vehicles and local residents can get from Treebones (PM 11.11) to Ragged Point, SOUTHBOUND ONLY.
Local residents living between Fuller’s (PM 42) and Fernwood (PM 47.03) can move between those points (five miles only).
UPDATE 1/9/17 1:10 PM: Highway 1 remains closed due to multiple mudslides between Ragged Point to Fullers Point. Caltrans reports there are also several trees down across the highway at Fernwood.
Businesses located between Fullers and Fernwood are open, but for outside traffic, the highway is closed betwen Ragged Point and Fernwood, according to Caltrans. If the roadway is passable at the time of need, emergency vehicles will be allowed through the closed area.
Caltrans is scheduled to update information on the closure at 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon.
PREVIOUS STORY: Highway 1 from Lucia to Ragged Point will be closed overnight Saturday due to active slides, according to a tweet from Caltrans.
Caltrans crews do not work overnight on Highway 1 and will return at 6 a.m. to reassess the situation.
Drivers will need to find an alternate route.
