Highway 1 now open at Fernwood

A portion of Highway 1 south of Big Sur will reopen at 4:00 p.m., according to Caltrans.

Caltrans reported Wednesday afternoon that the slide at Fernwood has been cleared and Highway 1 will open there at 4:00 p.m.. The closure will be relocated to Fuller’s at 5:00 p.m.

Motorists can now drive from Carmel past Big Sur to Fuller’s, where there is more slide activity.

Details on the closure:

Highway 1 remains closed to the public from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to Fuller’s in Monterey County. Local residents, emergency vehicles and employees will be allowed access from Fuller’s to Lucia, as conditions allow. Local residents have access betweem Ragged Point and Pitkin’s. There are still multiple slides between Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide. School buses will continue with their usual routes–without having the parents meet the kids on the north side of the closure this afternoon.
