Santa Cruz County braces for round two of storm system

Santa Cruz County officials monitoring the storm system are seeing a second front move through and are trying to get the word out that people should not let their guard down.

“We’re by no means out of the woods yet. We expect more rain and wind to pick up later this afternoon,” said Jason Hoppin, communications manager for Santa Cruz County.

The rain and wind are expected to take down more trees and wires, already a problem in parts of the county. This is expected to be an ongoing issue, especially in the San Lorenzo Valley which is a big area of concern, according to Hoppin. People there are being asked to stay off the roads and avoid traveling if possible.

County officials, including police and fire, are monitoring the situation closely at the Office of Emergency Services.

The San Lorenzo River is projected to reach flood stage between 3-5pm Sunday. Officials are also monitoring the Pajaro River.

Saturday night, county officials sent out emergency telephone notifications to people living near the San Lorenzo River, low lying areas along Soquel Creek, downtown Soquel and Aptos Creek in the beach flats area. They were advised to consider packing a bag in case they needed to get out fast. Hoppin said the county was not expecting to issue more notifications.
