Big Sur River rising

The Big Sur River is at flood levels, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

According to one gauge, the Big Sur River is at 11.5 feet.

The highest recorded peak stage, according to USGS WaterWatch, was on January 5, 1978 when the river reached 14.30 feet.

Blogger BigSurKate is keeping a close eye on things and, of course, is posting about it, too. She reports that a log jam broke free late Sunday afternoon and that debris was headed downstream. She wrote extensively about the Soberanes Fire’s impact on the Big Sur area. You can find her blog here.

Here’s what the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services posted about the situation around 5:15 p.m. Sunday:

For residents of Big Sur and surrounding areas – as you know, heavy rains will continue for the next several hours. OES and the Sheriff’s Department are monitoring the situation continuously.

Of concern is the Big Sur River, which is rising quickly and will continue to rise for many more hours. Those who live in the Fernwood to River Inn area which was affected by the voluntary evacuation last night may have that order reissued again.

For all residents, please remain alert to your surroundings and be aware of any situation that could be a danger to you or your property.
