Highway 1 reopens south of Ragged Point
UPDATE 1/5/17 2:40 PM: Caltrans reports that Highway 1 is now open in both directions from Ragged Point to Fullers Point. The highway was reopened at 1:15 p.m. after being closed since Tuesday night for the removal of mud and rocks.
UPDATE 1/4/17 4:20 PM: Highway 1 will remain closed through the evening from Ragged Point to Fullers Point, according to Jessica Biro, Caltrans public information officer.
Rock slides forced the California Highway Patrol to close the road Tuesday night.
According to Biro, crews will reassess the situation Thursday morning, but adds that it depends on the weather conditions. Drivers are advised to use an alternate route.
UPDATE 1/4/17 4:05 PM: Caltrans has reopened Highway 9 from Paradise Park to Glengarry Road in the Santa Cruz mountains. The highway had been closed for debris removal after several mudslides.
UPDATE 1/4/17 1:05 PM: A section of Highway 1 remains closed this afternoon and there is no estimated time for its reopening.
The closure extends from just south of Coast Ridge Road (mile marker 42.2) to the San Luis Obispo County line.
UPDATE 1/4/17 7:06 AM: North Rodeo Gulch Road at Ponza Lane in Santa Cruz County is closed, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Heavy rain is causing problems for residents and drivers.
The CHP also closed a portion of Highway 1 in the Big Sur area, where a tree fell onto a vehicle. The highway is closed from just south of Coast Ridge Road to the San Luis Obispo County line.
The closure will last through the night. Drivers should avoid the area as driving conditions aren’t safe there, the CHP said.
