Coyote sightings increase near Carmel

Carmel is attracting new visitors. The four-legged kind.

According to Cindy Mitchell, an animal control officer for the City of Carmel, there was an uptick of coyote sightings in 2016.

Mitchell says there were 16 documented coyote sightings in 2016. Although there is no hard data from previous years, Mitchell says the numbers are up from 2015.

Most of the coyotes were spotted in the Pescadero Canyon area near Pebble Beach, and the Mission Trail Preserve. The animals appear to be healthy and there have been no reports of attacks on people or pets.

Mitchell told KION on Tuesday that she doesn’t know if the coyotes were displaced by the Soberanes Fire.
