First Day Hikes offer healthy outdoor start to 2017

More than 50 state parks in California will offer free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day during the fifth annual First Day Hikes. The nationwide event is designed to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and start 2017 in a healthy way.

The hikes are led by state park rangers and volunteers, and take hikers into redwood groves, deserts and coastal trails.

There are several First Day Hikes planned on the Central Coast, including hikes at Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove, Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area in San Benito County, and Big Basin, Henry Cowell, Natural Bridges and Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz County.
