Post-holiday recycling plan announced
The holidays can provide joy, memories, and lots of trash.
On Thursday, the Monterey Regional Waste Management District announced a post-holiday recycling program for items like decorations, packaging, batteries, and even cooking oil from holiday meals.
Between December 26 and January 31, county residents can drop off polystyrene (Styrofoam) packing materials at MRWMD’s recycling facility at 14201 Del Monte Blvd. in Marina. Packing peanuts will not be accepted. Officials suggest peanuts be reused or given to local shipping stores.
GreenWaste Recovery customers can also place Styrofoam in clear bags for curbside recycling.
The Marina facility will also accept other holiday items:
Christmas trees for recycling. All decorations and stands must be removed from the trees. The service is free from Dec. 26-Jan. 31. Broken holiday lights, electronics, decorations and unwanted gifts can be dropped off at Last Chance Mercantile. Household batteries, cooking oil and cleaning supplies can be left at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. CRV beverage containers can be returned to the Buy Back Center and Last Chance Mercantile.
