Housing project for female veterans breaks ground in Marina

Some of Fort Ord’s old military housing will soon have a second life as housing for veterans.

On Thursday, officials held a groundbreaking event for the Monterey Quad, a 16-bedroom housing unit for women veterans, especially single female veterans with children.

The project calls for the rehabilitation of four housing units at the Veterans Transition Center’s Hayes Circle campus in Marina.

The four women’s units will join an existing 58-bed transitional veterans housing program operated by the VTC and a 71-unit permanent housing project that is currently under construction.

The project is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development through the City of Monterey Community Development Block Grant program.

The Monterey Quad is expected to open in April of 2017 .
