Carmel names new police chief

The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea named its new chief of police on Friday.

Commander Paul Tomasi, who has served with the Carmel Police Department since May 2008, will assume the position of Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police on January 1, 2017.

Tomasi is a 21-year veteran of law enforcement. He will replace the retiring chief, Mike Calhoun, who served 32 years with the Carmel Police Department.

Tomasi’s selection was announced by City Administrator Chip Rerig, who said, “Paul has the demeanor, the experience, the approachability and certainly the skill set to serve our unique community. He will be a healthy addition to the team that I am building.”

Tomasi, 48, called it “an honor for me to continue with this department in the capacity of Public Safety Director.”
