Smash and grab at popular Santa Cruz restaurant

A popular Santa Cruz restaurant is dealing with the aftermath of a burglary overnight, smashing the front of the building.

Santa Cruz Police said someone drove a vehicle into the front of Pono Hawaiian Grill at 120 Union St., smashing the entryway, shattering glass and then stealing an ATM inside.

Officers said they still need to review surveillance video from inside the restaurant and don’t have a suspect description yet.

Owner Tim Hunt said he’s upset his restaurant is having to deal with a burglary during the holiday season.

“[We’re] well equipped here, alarm system and everything else. You know, just very unfortunate that something like this happened you know, to us. But we’ll get back to where we need to be as a business,” Hunt said.
