Giving Tuesday a big hit for non-profits
While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are bringing in big bucks for retailers, non-profit groups around the country are trying to bring in donations on “Giving Tuesday”. Non-profits on the Central Coast say they’re always in need, but the un-official holiday helps.
Only in it’s fifth year, giving Tuesday is almost the Anti-Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
“Giving Tuesday is really the start of the holiday season for philanthropy. So people nationally and locally are just now encouraged to start giving back to their communities,” said VP of Philanthropic Services with the Community Foundation Monterey County, Christine Dawson.
But this time of the year, non-profits are also trying to get in on the season of giving, hoping consumers will turn into philanthropists.
“So today they’re being told to give back, and whether that’s their time, their talent, or their treasures,” said Dawson.
Local non-profits say Giving Tuesday still a relatively new thing and outreach is something they’re working on.
“I think as with anything new, it is being built. so every year, a little bit more we’ve been a little bit more proactive in making sure people know we’re participating and who we are and where we need support and why we need support,” said CASA of Monterey County Program and Education Director, Edna Chinn.
“Here at the SPCA for Monterey County we are completely independent. We can only help the animals by donations so this is an important holiday for us, right Snowie?” said SPCA for Monterey County Education and Outreach Manager, Dawn Fenton.
But non-profits are hoping that this new tradition isn’t just a one-day event, but rather a push for year round giving.
“There’s always a need and what we’re really seeing, especially this year, is that those needs are becoming greater,” said Dawson.
Whether it’s giving money or volunteer hours, local non-profits are always hoping for a helping hand, and they say giving Tuesday has been a great jumping off point.
“It’s a great new tradition, you know, in response to Cyber Monday and Black Friday to take some time with your family and your friends to give back to your community,” said Dawson.
