18 acre wetland in Castroville set for re-flood

Several Monterey County organizations will be coming together Friday afternoon to re-flood an 18 acre wetland in Castroville, according to a press release from Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

According to the release, the Monterey County Water Resources Agency, Central Coast Wetlands Group at Moss Landing Marine Labs and PG&E are doing the re-flood to restore a natural ecosystem that will provide clean water for the community.

The release goes on to say that the re-flood is part of a commitment to protect California’s ecosystems for PG&E customers and the public.

Inlet water is pumped from the Castroville Ditch, which drains approximately 600 acres of land farmed predominantly in artichokes and Brussels sprouts.

The California State Water Resources Control Board has provided Proposition 84 grant funding to construct the project.
