Medical pot shops not selling recreational marijuana
“Where can I buy my pot?”
That’s a question medical marijuana dispensaries are getting after California voters passed Prop 64 legalizing recreational marijuana.
The staff at several dispensaries reported Thursday that they are getting numerous calls from people interested in buying marijuana for recreational use. The problem is, you can’t legally buy it yet.
At Kind Peoples Collective in Santa Cruz, the mission is to help medical marijuana patients, but now there’s a new job-answering dozens of calls and emails about Prop. 64.
“I think what they are excited for is “access,” said Christopher Carr with Kind Peoples. “They are just looking to come in, participate and be a part of this community.”
Carr also said he is glad that there’s so much interest, but right now all they can sell is medical cannabis.
He and the company are following those rules until there is a clear set of regulations.
“We want to stay in full compliance with Santa Cruz so we are just trying educate and inform the public about what they have and that’s more rights,” said Carr.
Prop 64. allows adults to have up to an ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants at home, but selling is another story.
“There is no mechanism that provides the license to sell until January 2018 at the earliest,” said cannabis attorney Aaron Johnson.
Even with that long wait, Johnson said he expects the state will clear up some of the grey areas soon.
“Finding it in a more conventional way or commercial way is a difficult task,” said Johnson.
Still Carr said Prop 64. is still a good start.
“People are going to court and having cases dismissed and no longer getting felonies,” said Carr.
