Monterey, PG&E complete urban forestry project
An urban forestry project is complete in Monterey, aimed at making streets safer by protecting gas lines and increased sustainability, according to city forestry managers.
The city said permits to remove 49 city trees along Munras and Del Monte Avenues, along the Recreation Trail and Viejo Road, were issued in June. Permits required a three to one replacement ratio.City foresters said PG&E contractors planted the trees and installed above and below ground tree protection.
Tree planting began in late June and ended in October, including locally-sourced live oaks, Monterey pines, Monterey cypress, native black cottonwoods, California buckeyes, and weeping willows, the city said. 141 trees were planted in total.
“By working with PG&E we accomplished two very important goals with this project – enhancing public safety and enriching the beauty and health of our community,” said City Forester Steve Morton.
The city said the work will improve public safety near gas lines, while maintaining Monterey urban forest for the future.
