Two police sting operations in Salinas
Several people were cited after two different sting operations in Salinas Tuesday.
Salinas Police said officers the department conducted a court sting at the Monterey County Courthouse on Church Street. Five undercover officers, three motorcycle officers, and the traffic sergeant participated in the operation.
Undercover officers sat in the courtroom and watched arraignments for people who were arrested for DUI and driving on a suspended license. After the arraignments of unlicensed drivers, officers would follow the defendants to see if they drove off in a car. The officer then stopped anyone who was driving without a valid license.
Officers followed several people and the majority of them did not drive, but three people were caught driving without a valid license.
Two people were cited for driving on a suspended license and one person was cited for driving while unlicensed. All three cars were impounded for 30 days.
After the court string, three motorcycle officers and the traffic sergeant held a pedestrian sting at the intersection of Williams Road and Grandhaven Street.
During a span of two hours, officers wrote 12 tickets for violation of the pedestrian right-of-way and three tickets for people using a cellphone while driving.
Both operations were paid for with grant money from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
