Monterey High School coach arrested for having sex with a minor
An assistant football coach and campus monitor at Monterey High School has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a minor.
Austin Love, 30, was arrested on Monday, September 19, after an investigation by Monterey Police Detectives. He’s being charged with several violations including sex with a minor.
Detectives were tipped off by the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. Love started working at Monterey High School in August and previously volunteered with the Village Project, Inc. in Seaside.
MPUSD issued this statement: “The safety and well-being of students and staff are high priorities of Monterey High School and the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. Monterey High and the district were notified by a student about a serious and sensitive situation pertaining to an MPUSD employee. The district took swift action and notified Monterey Police Department. Additionally, the District released the probationary employee. School officials continue to cooperate with law enforcement during this ongoing investigation, and students and staff are safe on campus. All faculty and staff in MPUSD go through a background check, which includes the Department of Justice fingerprinting, prior to hiring and interacting with students.”
Detectives are worried there may be more victims. They’re asking anyone with information to call Detective Sergeant Blair or Detective Welch with the MPD Investigations Division at 831-646-3816, the MPD General Number at 831-646-3830, or the confidential tip line at 831-646-3840.
