UPDATE: Man hospitalized after standoff at John Steinbeck Library
UPDATE 9/16/16 1:33 AM: According to the Salinas Police Department, officers originally responded to Steinbeck Library for a report of a man with a gun in his waistband.
Officers arrived to find a 32-year-old man, with possible mental health issues, barricaded inside the bathroom. The man would not come out and claimed to have a gun pointed at the door.
Employees and patrons of the library were evacuated as negotiation experts responded. After about four and a half hours, the man came out of the bathroom and was peacefully taken into custody. He did not have a gun.
While alone in the bathroom, he damaged a fan and lights. He also burned toilet paper, in an attempt to set off the sprinklers.
He was taken to a local hospital and admitted on a psychological hold.
PREVIOUS STORY: A man is in the hospital after barricading himself inside the John Steinbeck Library in Salinas.
According to police, the man was armed and locked himself inside a bathroom shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday.
The standoff ended about four hours later and the man was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
