Federal delegation headed to Salinas

Salinas’ violence reduction strategy will be front and center next week when a federal delegation visits the city, which continues to struggle with crime and deadly shootings.

The City of Salinas announced today that members from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the Department of Justice will meet with Mayor Joe Gunter and other leaders next Tuesday and Wednesday about the city’s violence reduction strategy.

The Community Alliance for Safety and Peace will share updates on progress implementing the strategy, according to a press release issued late Friday afternoon.

Salinas is a charter member of the White House’s National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention, according to the city.

There have been 28 homicides in Salinas in 2016.
