Santa Cruz Democrats react to DNC drama

The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday and some political drama was already stealing the show. While Hillary Clinton was poised to accept the nomination, uproar at the convention over leaked emails, showing the DNC favored Hillary over Bernie Sanders.

“I can’t speak to what people who are not working for me who were saying whatever they were saying, i can’t speak to that,” said Clinton in an interview with 60 minutes.

Thousands of protesters are outraged and said Sanders was cheated. The embarrassing emails forced the DNC chairwoman to resign. The drama came just weeks after Sanders endorsed Clinton for President and even now he wants his voters to support her.

Recently in Salinas, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom said this, “This party is going to unify, I thought it was a great event the other day, the unification between Sanders and Clinton camps, when we have one person to unify against and that’s Donald Trump and I’ll tell you from the latino community never in the history of this nation has there been a more unified force than Donald Trump and he must be defeated.”

UC Santa Cruz is home to many Bernie Sanders supporters, so we checked in with them to see how they felt about the leaked emails.

“Super scandalous, but if Bernie told me to jump off a bridge I wouldn’t jump off a bridge. I like him but I supported him for what he stood for I don’t support what Hillary stands for not really with it not down with hill,” said UCSC supporter, Emily Stone.

Donald Trump got in the mix tweeting, “Leaked emails of DNC show plans to destroy Bernie Sanders. Mock his heritage and much more. Online from Wikileaks really vicious, rigged.”

“Trumps all over the place tries to confuse everyone I don’t know i agree with one statement of his about he’s admitting that they’re attacking Bernie and it’s kind of noble but I don’t think that describes him as a person,” said Stone.

Most students on campus are sticking with Bernie or bust.
