CalFire helicopters are back in the air
UPDATE 7/25/2016 2:12 PM: CalFire air attack helicopters are back in the air after being grounded by poor visibility Monday morning. The first helicopter took off from Carmel Valley Airport at 12:30 p.m.. Nine helicopters and crews have been stationed at the airport since Saturday.
PREVIOUS POST (correcting location): CalFire officials report that poor visibility has forced it to ground all air attack planes and helicopters being used to fight the Soberanes Fire. The helicopters stationed in Carmel Valley are currently on standby.
Officials say they are also concerned about winds that are expected to strengthen this afternoon.
CalFire officials report the Soberanes Fire in the Garrapata State Park has destroyed 20 homes and burned 14,897 acres. The fire is 5 percent contained.
