Fallen San Jose police officer honored by local agencies
On Tuesday, thousands gathered at the SAP Center in San Jose to honor a fallen San Jose police officer, who died on duty last week. Police departments across the Central Coast and the state attended memorial services for Officer Michael Katherman.
San Jose Police said Katherman was patrolling on a motorcycle when he has hit and killed by a minivan last Tuesday. Investigators said the minivan driver was cooperative and was not arrested.
Law enforcement agencies from Monterey and San Benito Counties said it was about honoring one of their own.
“It did happen in San Jose but it doesn’t make a difference. Mike was a brother of ours and we shall show respect towards him and his family,” said Commander Roberto Filice from the Marina Police Department.
“We have a bond because we experience life and death and scary things together,” said Chief David Westrick of the Hollister Police Department.
Katherman worked for the San Jose Police Department for 11 years. He leaves behind a wife and two children. The San Jose Police Officer’s Association organized a fund benefiting Katherman’s family and donations can be made in their website.
