Law enforcement officials gathered in San Jose Wednesday to mourn the loss of Officer Michael Katherman, a San Jose Police motorcycle officer who died in a traffic accident Tuesday.
The accident happened while Katherman was on routine motorcycle patrol. Police say he was traveling northbound on 10th Street when a minivan turned left in front of him. Katherman was unable to stop in time and collided with the van.
A witness stopped to perform CPR and used the officer’s police radio to call for help. Officer Katherman was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police say the driver of the minivan remained on-scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Police officials from Campbell, Gilroy, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale joined the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office to pay their respects Wednesday.
Katherman was an 11-year veteran who had served his entire career with the San Jose Police Department. Heleaves behind a wife and two sons, 8 and 10 years old.
