Fireworks returning to Salinas, voters pass Measure C

In a hotly contested issue for Salinas, voters have spoken, saying they want their safe and sane fireworks back.

“I respect the fact the voters voted and we have to go forward with whatever they tell us they want,” Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter said. “We voted for a subject that a lot of citizens had complained about… where they were on election day, maybe they changed their mind.”

Last year, City Council banned fireworks after people started complaining about litter, noise and safety concerns. It was a decision the Salinas Fire Department strongly supported.

“They burn very hot,” Fire Marshal Sam Klemek said. “They cause burns. They start fires.”

Yet a petition to reverse the ban moved forward, largely organized by firework companies. Non-profits who raised money in the past by selling them also supported the petition.

To help, City Council voted to allow a $50,000 fireworks show at the rodeo grounds this year, giving non-profits the opportunity to make money at the event.

That show will be the only place people can see fireworks in Salinas this 4th of July. Just because Measure C is passing doesn’t mean it goes into effect right away.

“The city ordinance is still in effect and we do intend to enforce it,” Deputy Chief David Shaw said.

Salinas Police warn there will be extra patrols this holiday and the $1,250 fine still stands.

But next year, likely a different story, something Rafael Garcia is happy about.

“America is known to be really traditional, for example the 4th of July,” Garcia said. “So I think it would be nice to have fireworks.”

Salinas Police and Fire are already working with the city to come up with a plan to educate the public when the rules on fireworks change next year.
