Health warnings posted at Monterey beach
City officials are warning swimmers to stay out of the water at Monterey Municipal Beach after high levels of bacteria were found in water samples taken Thursday. Advisories will remain posted until bacteria levels return to safe levels.
Higher levels of bacteria have been associated with the increased potential risk of illness. Among the potential sources of bacteria are marine life such as seals, otters and birds, rainfall runoff, storm drains, and human activity.
Health officials recommend that no one swim at the beach, or have contact with storm drain water.
