Kids learn to read while spreading love to shelter animals

The SPCA of Santa Cruz has launched a new program called Rescue Readers.

“We wanted to benefit not only the animals but the kids. So the kids get to come and read to the animals, and then the animals benefit because they get a little extra love,” said SPCA Humane Education Coordinator Brenna Ewing.

The newly launched program has already had some impressive results.

“Once the kids start reading and are focused on their book you can see the animals inching closer. Animal’s that are more nervous will come out of their shell,” said Ewing.

They aren’t the only ones coming out of their shell.

“They really love to read to a non-bias crowd, and they’re just more comfortable reading out loud. I’ve seen a big growth,” said Holy Cross Catholic School Teacher Laura smith.

“I like reading to animals more than I like reading to people so I like to go to the SPCA,” said Holy Cross student Nicholas Saldavia.

Before arriving students get to pick out their favorite books.

“Usually books about animals. I just think they like that,” said Holy Cross student Sophia Fitzpatrick.

“I just really like planets and I think they would like that too,” said Saldavia.

Holy Cross Teacher Laura Smith said being around the animals has awoken an awareness in her students.

“I think they are definitely more aware of spaying and neutering and the need of adoption and how many animals there are without homes,” said Smith.

“I think they really like it because it soothes them and just have a better day because of it,” said Fitzpatrick.
