Group of great white sharks spotted at Seacliff Beach in Aptos

Ten great white sharks at Seacliff State Beach in Aptos is enough to make most people stay out of the water, unless you’re shark enthusiast Neil Pearlberg.

“It’s where they live. I’m in their territory so I have got to respect them. They are just out there minding their own business too,” said Pearlberg.

Still, even he was a little nervous when he spotted one swimming right near him when he was paddle boarding.

“Until you see one, then you pucker up,” said Pearlberg.

But it wasn’t a surprise. On Tuesday, before heading out, Pearlberg and our cameras got a view from above courtesy of Specialized Helicopters. The big fish could be seen swimming near the cement ship.

“They’ve been prolific, to put it plainly. It’s the talk of the town,” said Chris Gularte with Specialized Helicopters.

Most of the young great whites are between five and ten feet in length. Experts said warmer El Nino waters have expanded their habitat.

“Some are just beyond the surf break out there and there are people along the beach, splashing and enjoying a nice, sunny day and I’m sure they have no idea there’s great white sharks less than 100 feet away from them,” said Dr. David Ebert with Moss Landing Marine Labs.

But fans life Pearlberg are convinced the sharks aren’t out to hurt anybody.

“You can tell that they are just swimming, it didn’t look at me like flash its teeth, like maybe a dog wants to take a bite of you, no, he’s just cruising,” said Pearlberg.
