Measure P contruction underway
You’ll finally start seeing some of the impacts of Measure P from 2014 in the City of Monterey, but what does that mean for residents? While the purpose of Measure P is to fix up the streets and signs in the City of Monterey, many may see the construction as a nuisance.
Measure P is a 1% sales and use tax that was approved by voters in November 2014 in order to create funds to fuel a citywide road work project in Monterey. During a 10-day period, contruction crews will be repaving roads that may have potholes or cracks or possibly uneven pavement. This will prove troublesome for drivers at various times of the day as traffic may be diverted or cut down to one-lane, and in many cases, street parking will be eliminated in those areas. This could be a problem for businesses, something the City of Monterey hopes will be handled with patience.
“As we do this pavement work, we’re going to have to divert traffic to and from locations so that it will impact anyone traveling in the city of Monterey for a short period of time and we just ask for patience and looking at the end of the day, at the project, and how it’s going to make the streets and the city safer and look better,” said Monterey City Engineer Steve Wittry.
Though street reconstruction will be happening all over the City of Monterey and at different times, one notable spot will close the Del Monte Avenue offramp on Highway 1 South. That will go into effect tonight from 8pm to 5pm and continue every night through Thursday.
Measure P projects will continue on and off at least until October during a period that the City of Monterey is calling “construction season.”
