UPDATE: CHP says sleepy driver caused deadly crash

UPDATE 4/14/16 11:15 AM: CHP identified the 8-year-old boy who died in the car crash as Adrian Bocanegra. Bocanegrawas about to celebrate his 9th birthday.

CHP officials said they’re working on finding out the status of Adrian’s brother, 6-year-old Christopher Bocanegra, who was seriously hurt.

The investigation is still ongoing, but CHP investigators said they do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision.

UPDATE: 4/13/16 7:30 PM: The California Highway Patrol said a sleepy driver crashed into another vehicle killing an eight-year-old boy near Watsonville on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the CHP, at 1:55, the driver of a maroon Mercedes was going westbound on Hall Road when he started to fall asleep. The driver says his car then crossed over the double yellow lines and into the path of a black Honda Civic going eastbound.

The driver of the Honda tried to avoid the Mercedes but couldn’t and the Mercedes crashed head on into the Honda.

A father and his two boys were inside the Honda. An eight-year-old boy was killed and a six-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in San Jose.

The CHP said the six-year-old was not seated in a proper car seat. Officers also say, even though legally an eight-year-old doesn’t have to be in a car seat, it is recommended that they are in one until a seatbelt fits them properly.

CHP officers want to remind anyone with questions or concerns about child car seats to contact their local CHP office.
