Pothole problems for Central Coast road crews
school district. oldtown salinas is getting back to normal. today salinas fire chief ed rodriguez announced that main and alisals streets are now fully open… weeks after a fire at the dick bruhn building.. shutdown the area. the fire chief says the building is still fenced off, so sidewalks are not accessible on those streets.. fire officials are expected to meet with the building’s owner tomorrow to discuss the next steps in securing the building and removing all debris. a viewer contacted kion with concerns about potholes around the central coast… and tonight, we’re tracking down some answers. kion’s mariana hicks spoke to a caltrans maintenance crew to learn more about the ongoing struggle with the road hazards. *trt: 123outcue:soc: *00-05 soledad 38-45 sam 50-54 mike *nats of sam*caltrans maintenance worker sam moreno says filling potholes can be a never ending task.it’s a year-round problem on our decades-old roadways… sometimes *driven by rainy weather.*sealing cracks in the pavement is a critical step… sam moreno//caltrans, district 5″if we don’t crackseal in time, water will get underneath the pavement and will push out. the water will work it’s way out underneath and it’ll start popping it out and that’s only because of the volume of the traffic and the bigger trucks that are coming.” if sealing the crack doesn’t work…that popped up pavement becomes a pothole.and caltrans knows our roads are riddled with them.sam moreno//caltrans, district 5 “one of the things caltrans is working on is the pothole situation that we got going on because it’s a safety issue for everybody.”take a look at what happened when a driver hit a pothole in salinas. mike spencer//owner, tire and wheel world”bent the rim, ruin the rim, so we had to replace the rim. it also wrecked the tire.” but if drivers hit something hard enough, it can do more damage than just to the tire and wheel.mechanics say it can ruin front end suspension or knock out a car’s alignment. they recommend keeping an eye out for the potholes.. but that’s not the only
