Vaughn Taylor wins PGA Tour title at 2016 Pebble Beach Pro-Am
After competing against more than 150 professional golfers, Vaughn Taylor won this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
“I was first alternate at the deadline, you know,” said Taylor. “I’m standing here right now, you know, I can’t believe it.”
Vaughn closed with a 65.
A missed putt by Phil Michelson helped him land the victory.
“I just kind of keyed in on something my teacher taught me and I rolled with it the rest of the week and I putted really well this week,” said Taylor.
It’s been 11 years since he won his first PGA tour.
Just two years ago he didn’t even get into the tournament.
“He spent the week here working with local professionals,” said Steve John, director of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. “He, Scott and I and a robot and two years later he’s in the winner’s circle again.”
Thousands of spectators cheered, gasped and sighed during the tournament that dates back to 1937.
It was startedby Bing Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe.
Nearly 80 years later, it draws crowds of all ages.
“Very well since this is like my first big tournament,” said 8-year-old Emiliano Lila.
“This is our second time getting to come and wow we felt like we won the lottery,” said spectator Peggy Wahl.
Vaughn’s wife also echoed the sentiment.
“I wasn’t even thinking about a win, I was thinking about a top 10 you know,” said Leot Taylor, Vaughn’s wife. “He was planning on playing Web this whole year. We’re trying to have a second child and this will make it a lot easier.”
Now the champion will move onto to the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, playing in his hometown.
“Just a blessing, a dream come true,” said Taylor.
More than $10 million from the tournament will be donated to charities in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties.
