Law enforcement agencies set up dui checkpoints for AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am

With large crowds in town for the 2016 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, law enforcement agencies across Monterey County said they’re working together to make sure drivers are safe on the road. Tuesday was day two of the Pro Am and many folks were watching golf with a nice cold beverage. The event had cocktail pop up tents and bloody mary’s seemed to be the drink of choice. Emily Brennan said she and her friend came up for the day, and planned to drink responsibly.

“I think that it’s smart to have a great time and just get a sober driver, it’s easy to get an Uber it’s easy to get an alternate form of transportation. You can absolutely be out here in the sun and have a great time but get a safe ride home,” said Pro Am spectator, Emily Brennan.

Pebble Beach does have some drink restrictions in place, two drinks per person on the golf course. There’s also shuttle services provided for guests. Pro Am officials did designate an area specifically for taxi, limo, Uber drop off and pick-ups. A luxury police hope people will take advantage of. Salinas police said it and other agencies will have extra officers on special dui patrols for the PRO AM events that attract people from all over.

“We will be looking out for anybody that’s been drinking so I mean if a dui patrol officer is looking for poor driving anything from running a red to swerving anything that shows the driver might be impaired,” said Sgt. Gerry Ross with Salinas Police.

Patrol cars will be on all the major arteries into Salinas, one being highway 68.

“I think that it’s smart that the organizers of the event went out of the way and like the local police to make sure people don’t drink and drive especially on these roads,” said Brennan.

17 Mile Drive is known for its curvy two way roads. Officers said lots of people come in for this event from out of town, unfamiliar with the twists and turns. If the dui checkpoints aren’t enough of a deterrent, there’s always the prices. Folks can expect to pay $14 a drink.
