Crews busy preparing for AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
There’s nothing like the smell of fresh cut grass.
“We’re just grooming the grass every day to prepare the golf course,” said Director of Golf Course Maintenance Chris Dalhamer.
According to the Director of Golf Course Maintenance, Chris Dalhamer, the preparation for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am begins about six to eight weeks out.
“We’re rolling out the greens, we’re doing different techniques to make it as smooth of grass as possible,” said Dalhamer.
A crew of 28 is in charge or roughly 100 acres, so as you can imagine they’re busy all year round. But for the pro-am the workload only increases.”
“Managing the structure and all the bleachers for a tournament of this magnitude, and grooming grass to levels that are expected by the tour professionals,” said Dalhamer.
Which means handling even the smallest of details.
“Trimming sprinkler heads, edging car paths, cleaning off signs. We try to manage the whole property to present it for the professional golfers as they come for the AT&T,” said Dalhamer.
From the ground to the airwaves.
Steve John “I think with a sponsor like AT&T you need to be ahead, and were there, so WIFI capable, you got charging stations. There’s no reason to leave your phone at home just be mindful when you’re on the tees and greens,” said Monterey Peninsula foundation tournament director Steve John.
This year is expected to bring in a record amount of people.
“You know you’re talking about bringing tens of thousands of people out here every day and so it requires a little city to do that,” said EVP of Golf and Retail at Pebble Beach Company RJ Harper.
