Monterey City Council reconsidering safe parking program

The Monterey City Council unanimously voted to take action on an urgency ordinance for a safe parking program.

The council voted in favor of this Wednesday night after voting down the option of the program at United Methodist Church last week. The council decided it was not an appropriate location.

On Wednesday night, city council directed staff to draft an ordinance that would allow for the program somewhere on city property. Staff are now looking for potential sites.

The safe parking program allows the homeless to park and sleep in a specified location during certain hours. Those who wish to do so must be a participant of the Safe Parking Program and follow specific rules regarding their vehicles.

The urgency ordinance will be reviewed by the council at their next meeting on February 2.
